CILEUNGSI – From its inception, Bugenvil Eco-Friendly “Subvillage” has made numerous achievements. In its first year, the garden run by mothers in Wanaherang Village, Bogor Regency snatched a win at Eco-Friendly Bogor Regency, a regency-level competition between “eco-friendly subvillages” or rural environmental movements initiated by the Bogor Regency government.

The 400-meter enclosure has brought forth a wide range of healthy food and drinks like red ginger drink, spinach crackers, and bok choy juice. Their ingredient quality and taste are widely acclaimed that orders keep flooding, as one would expect. But who knew this successful garden was once a landfill?

“We used to dump waste here, but for me, [maintaining environmental] health and hygiene must be a priority [in this community],” said Wanaherang village head Heri Sudewo.

Armed with a strong resolve to restore Wanaherang’s natural environment, local mothers devoted themselves to turning this disposal area into a productive yard. Starting their effort in 2022, these women are helped by Bogor Regency Environmental Service.

Soon, plant demand grew as the site expanded and Wanaherang rolled out greening projects. In honor of Indonesia Tree Planting Day on November 28, Korindo Foundation and Aspex Kumbong organized “Ayo Menanam” (Let’s Plant!) at this subvillage.

With the Korindo Group subsidiary, the Foundation handed out perennial saplings of sengon, fruit varieties (orange, lime, mango, and soursop), vegetables (chili and tomato), and herbs (ginger and sand ginger).

At the handover ceremony Tuesday (12/5), Korindo Foundation’s general secretary Seo Jeongsik hoped to see the plants growing nicely and helping the Wanaherang locals.

“We hope these vegetable and herb saplings encourage food independence and bring advantages to the community, both in terms of economic profit and consumption through additional food for households,” Seo said.

“Ayo Menanam” wasn’t exclusive to Korindo Foundation and Aspex Kumbong; this program was also run by other Korindo Group companies, such as PT Korindo Heavy Industry, PT Dongbang Development, PT Bimaruna Jaya, PT Bimaruna Marga Jaya, and PT Kenertec Power System.

Pancoran Subdistrict, Cakung, Cibubur, Balaraja, and Cilegon were among its target locations. There were 5,000 saplings donated straight from PT Aspex Kumbong and PT Korindo Heavy Industry’s mini nurseries. (PR)
