The Chairman of the Inter-parliament Cooperation Body (BKSAP) of the House of Representatives, Nurhayati Ali Assegaf, received a visit of the EU Ambassador to ASEAN, Fransisco Fontan Pardo, on Tuesday (18/4).
The European Union Parliament considers palm oil industry of creating some problems such as deforestation, degradation of wildlife habitat, corruption, child labor, and human rights violations. The resolution specifically mentions Indonesian palm oil industry as one of the parties who contributes to the problems.
The government needs to involve the House of Representatives in lobbying the European government and parliament to discuss the boycott on palm oil products.
She stated that the negative records in the motion were an insult to Indonesia and it was unacceptable. “The allegations saying that palm oil is a corruption, child labor exploitation, human rights violations, and indigenous rights infringements, are cruel and irrelevant accusations,” she said.
