BALARAJA Gembong Village in Balaraja Subdistrict, Tangerang Regency was among the locations for the annual celebration of Indonesian Tree Planting Day. This event came to be thanks to the local community and Korindo Heavy Industry (KHI), whose partnership sought to strengthen commitments in protecting the environment, enhancing food security, and fostering collaboration.

The mass planting on Friday (11/28) involved Korindo Foundation’s general secretary Lee Sunghoon, KHI’s management representative Hyun Sunwoo, Tangerang Provincial Representative Council member Herni Susilawati, Gembong Village leader Nurjen, and members of the village’s farming group.

Korindo Foundation’s general secretary Lee Sunghoon called Indonesian Tree Planting Day “a crucial moment for the company [KHI] to make a greater contribution to society”.

“Indonesian Tree Planting Day falls on this day, and so we are distributing seedlings to plant with the Balaraja community. There are 2,000 tree and vegetable seedlings that everyone here can use to build [better] food resilience.”

Meanwhile, KHI representative Hyun Sungwoo introduced Ayo Menanam, the company’s annual initiative, as a pledge to achieve environmental sustainability. In his speech, he encouraged every member of the local society to “not only engage in planting, but also the maintenance of the trees” to ensure lasting benefits.

“Indonesian Tree Planting Day offers an important opportunity to plant more trees for the sake of our ecosystem. [I’m sure] we all know trees are lungs of the earth and prevent natural disasters like flooding and landslides. It’s why our company creates Ayo Menanam. We feel called to take part [in planting] and investing [in the environment] for future generations.”

Gembong Village leader Nurjen shared his gratitude for the event. He added that the Indonesian Tree Planting Day program has significant benefits for the people.

“We are gathering here today for Indonesian Tree Planting Day, [this moment] is very precious to our village. On behalf of the Tangerang government and our farming group, we would like to thank [KHI] for Ayo Menanam.”

Nurjen hoped to expand their partnership into other projects that empower the villagers. Tangerang Provincial Representative Council member, Herni Susilawati, had the same idea.

“We [want to] appreciate KHI for the tree varieties it gives as a CSR donation. I hope the company continues to meet its social responsibilities through other ways, aside from food security [efforts],” Herni said, praising the Corporate Social Contribution (CSC) action.

These varieties included tomato, cayenne pepper, eggplant, longan, mango, avocado, red lip (pucuk merah in Bahasa Indonesia), and common guava. Their seedlings would be planted on village-owned lands and shared with the local farming group and other village members.

Like so, the Gembong Village government, Gembong residents, and Korindo Heavy Industry demonstrated the positives of cross-sector collaboration on the well-being of local people and natural ecosystems. This event is expected to usher in a greener, food-resilient, and productive village community. (PR)
