Korindo Group Statement on the KOMNAS HAM Report

By 21 July 2020August 5th, 2020No Comments

On July 17, 2020, the National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia released its Report on the death of Mr Marius “Betera” Tigamirop. The Report has cleared Korindo’s subsidiary, Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) of every and all accusations of wrongdoing.

We are grateful to the Papua Human Rights Commission’s on-site visit, interviewing witnesses, preparing the thorough Report, and releasing the result of the investigation to the public and media.

The Commission stated that there was neither land theft nor any human rights abuse by the TSE and the Korindo Group, and these findings were shared with the public during the Commission press conference held on July 7, 2020, in Jayapura. Mr Tigamirop planted banana trees inside the TSE farmland (HGU) along the drainage ditch without permission from TSE, and banana trees had to be cleared for harvesting oil palm fruits.

The TSE has made a 200 million Rupiah contribution and provided a house for the family as a form of humanitarian assistance.

In addition to our full support for the Papua Human Rights Commission, we respectfully request that the Papua Human Rights Council form and lead a multilateral consultative body for achieving economic and social interests as well as protecting residents’ rights in the palm industry in the Papua region.

To improve and strengthen the principles of human rights protection in our operation, we agree to conduct training of employees by the Papua Human Rights Commission and other organizations.

Although we agree with the overall conclusion of the investigation regarding our company, we would like to clarify the following points about the police:

  • There are many establishments within the TSE Company Compound including two hospitals, a police station, two schools, several mosques and churches, fire stations, a park, a playground as well as several general stores as the Company Compound with reliable electricity, security, and communication apparatus is the centre and hub of residents’ social and official activities.
  • It would be superfluous to mention that the TSE and the Korindo Group do not and cannot influence the works of churches, mosques, hospitals, schools, parks, commercial stores, and the police just because these establishments are located within the Company Compound.

We reiterate our deepest condolences to the family again and wish to express our utmost gratitude to the National Human Rights Commission of Indonesia and its Papuan operation.
