Modern clinic in remote area of Papua, Boven Digoel Regency, Papua Province, is one of the easternmost regions, as well as the outermost area of eastern Indonesia which is directly adjacent to Indonesia’s neighboring country, Papua New Guinea.

Judging from the geographical area of the province of Papua, the lack of access to roads and infrastructure has an impact on the low quality of public health in this district with a population of 73 thousand people. It is very different from the development developments that exist in the regions of several Provinces and City Regencies in Indonesia.

Moved to contribute to improving the health quality of the Boven Digoel community, Korindo Group through its palm oil business unit, PT Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE), took the initiative to build a modern health clinic that can provide adequate health services for the people of Boven Digoel.

Korindo Group Public Relations Manager Yulian Mohammad Riza said the presence of Asiki Clinic was a form of support to build Indonesia from the periphery.

“Through Asiki Clinic, we hope to contribute to improving the quality of public health in Boven Digoel,” he said in his statement, Thursday (12/9).
Inaugurated in September 2017, Asiki Clinic has eight priority programs in an effort to improve the health of the local community.
The 8 programs are reducing the mortality rate of pregnant women, mothers giving birth and newborns through improving maternal, under-five and family planning (KB) health services, then improving the nutritional status of the community.

Furthermore, control of infectious and non-communicable diseases is followed by environmental sanitation, development of the National Health Insurance System (JKN), community empowerment and disaster and health crisis management.

Then the improvement of primary health services, the improvement of a safe and comfortable work environment, and finally the focus on increasing professional human resources.

Korindo Group together with KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) have succeeded in presenting a modern clinic called Asiki Clinic which is located in Asiki, a village in a remote area of Papua, on the Indonesia-Papua New Guinea border. This clinic is presented free of charge to the people of Papua and the poor as a contribution to efforts to improve the health quality of the local community.

Located on an area of 2,929 m2, this clinic has quite complete facilities such as outpatient, inpatient, delivery room, newborn care/perinatology, Emergency Unit, minor operating room, ultrasound equipment, pharmacy, and other facilities such as the provision of an ambulance.

Asiki Clinic Manager dr. Firman Jayawijaya said the eight programs would continue to be intensified. What’s more, Asiki Clinic has become the best clinic at the national level as a First Level Health Facility (FKTP).
This award was given by BPJS Kesehatan on August 15, 2019 with the title “FKTP with a high commitment in providing the best service for JKN-KIS participants in the primary clinic category”.

This award complements the previous achievements, namely in 2017 this clinic has won the title of The Best Performance from BPJS Health for the Primary Clinic Category at the Deputy for Papua and West Papua Regions.
“It is a special impetus for all of us to continue to improve in providing the best service for our patients,” said dr. Word.

Considering that there are so many Boven Digoel residents who do not have access to health care, the Asiki Clinic team of doctors took the initiative to pick up the ball, namely by providing counseling and free health services in various villages.

Karlus Anggitume, a member of the community in Ujung Kia Village, Boven Digoel Regency, Papua, said that the Asiki Clinic has carried out four health service activities in his village.

“It really helps us. Especially children and the elderly. We hope that Asiki Clinic will visit us regularly,” he concluded.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the fabric of many sectors, including health. The reason is that the spread of the corona virus has caused many people to be reluctant to visit health facilities.

This condition is experienced by Asiki Clinic, one of the modern health facilities in the interior of Boven Digoel, Papua. Since the Covid-19 virus approached Indonesia in March 2020, the clinic managed by Tunas Sawa Erma (TSE) Group has experienced a significant decrease in patients.

Asiki Clinic Manager, Dr. Firman Jayawijaya, said that normally, 100 to 120 people visit the clinic every day. Since the pandemic, that number has been reduced to around 50 people. “This means that there is a 50 percent decrease,” said Firman in his statement, Tuesday (27/4/2021).

In fact, according to Firman, the clinic had only served a few patients every day for some time. “This is a concern for management considering that there are still many health problems

experienced by the local community and must be resolved immediately,” he added.

Asiki Clinic is not standing idly by and trying to adapt. Even though it is located in a remote area, the clinic, which was inaugurated in September 2017, is aggressively utilizing technological developments to reach people who need health services.

Firman said, one of the programs is in collaboration with Mobile JKN, an application owned by BPJS Kesehatan that can be accessed via mobile phones. Through this application, the community around the company can conduct health consultations with doctors at the Asiki Clinic.

“When the doctor has clearly diagnosed the disease, they will make a prescription for medicine. Finally, the officer will deliver to the patient’s residence. So, we reduce contact with many people, we protect them and ourselves,” said Firman.

Consultations can also be done through the WhatsApp application with the same process, namely the medicines will be sent by the officers. However, there are times when doctors find it difficult to make a diagnosis with just an interview. When finding this problem, Asiki medical personnel will visit residents’ homes while still implementing health protocols in a disciplined manner.

“These various efforts are made so that Asiki Clinic can still provide maximum health services. On the other hand, they can continue to take advantage of existing facilities,” said Firman.

Firman said, Asiki Clinic only used the online platform in May 2020 because it had to conduct studies and experiments first. The goal is to ensure that the health service process continues to run optimally even with the new process.

“Over time, the use of online platforms has decreased. This is because many people have the courage to seek treatment directly at the Asiki Clinic, although it is not as good as before the pandemic. They have believed and returned to the clinic again,” said Firman.
